I used Conti's for a while, but went to full winter tyres in 2010, swapping between the two types according to the season. Now I'm using Michelin Cross Climate which are great across the year. I'll stick with these now as I don't think there's a better compromise for all season use in the UK. Reviews are very good.

Get some local advice from people in your area that drive a similar car to you.

While we can all sit here and give our personal preferences on tyres, the way roads are maintained and indeed their original surface varies radically across the country.
For example, up until about 6 years ago, i lived in Cambridgeshire for about 10 years, i had pirelli P6000s on and they were ok. Cross the border into Suffolk and not only did they become a lot quieter, they also performed a lot better.
Cross the border into Norfolk instead (i actually lived within 6 miles of each border) and they weren't good, not good at all.

A few years back when the Pirellis wore out, i fitted Falken Ziex ZX-914 Ecoruns instead. Superb tyre round here, pretty good on the roads of Cambridgeshire and not even that bad on Norfolks roads.

However, i have heard bad reports on both of those tyres from various parts of the country. Conversely i've also heard better reports than mine in other different parts of the country.
As a rule of thumb, the areas where i've heard bad reports tend to rate things like Continentals, Michelins etc very highly, round here they have as much grip as a Teflon coated ice cube on a skating rink!

That's my reasoning for getting local advice!

I keep going back to Goodyear Efficientgrip's intially on my old A3, then the other halfs Ibiza and now the V50, tyres can be very subjective, and as mentioned dependent on the road surfaces in your area. ie i really didnt like the Pirelli p6000's that came on my V50, still have them on the rear though as lots of life in them

Its a very subject opinion but Nexen are "none" brand for me as compared to Uniroyals. Rainsport 3 are great tyres for wet, designed especially for that so if thats what in your mind - defo go for those. My GF has them on her Corsa for last 4 years and I confirm those handle exceptionally well.
have a look at charts below, and decide yourself.
Nexen
Unis

Nexen make decent tyres. Our V50 used to run Nexen N'Blu Eco as summer tyres (fitted by the Volvo dealer before we bought it) and to be honest they were great.

As soon as I got my T5 I put 4 Uniroyal rainsport 3's on the car as they're what I always use.I actually noticed that the steering didn't feel anywhere near as sharp and responsive due to the softer side walls these tyres have, never noticed it before. I have a 'sport' with 18" wheels though which may be why it's more obvious now.

I'll probably go for Michelin Pilot Sport 4 next time - They review better than the Uniroyals at everything.

...but the price though :/
I dont think its fair comparison between Tier1 brand and Uni's.
If price is a factor (for someone like me going trough 1 set of tyres per year) I can recommend my current Fuldas. Car behaves much better than on previous Hankooks and full set of those tyres is 100e less comparing to Tier 1 brands, yet still they outperform many of them.

I don't care about price when it comes to tyres, given they're the only thing connecting you to the road I just want what's going to stop me the best in need of an emergency stop.

I see your point though, not everyone takes that approach and there are more than good enough tyres for less money out there.
