Question V70 locking gremlins

Hi all, new here so please be gentle 😏

I have recently bought a ph1 v70 tdi. Absolutely love the thing! However it seems to have a few gremlins that I'm struggling with.

I've already repaired the passenger front door lock as the switch wasn't showing the door closed, previous owner just removed all bulbs from courtesy lights.

I have no remote fobs with the car...

Now the bit that's bugging me, with the car unlocked and drivers door open, as I close the door the drivers lock motor cycles through its 'unlock' motion. Only the drivers door and every time I close the door.

The car will lock and unlock fine using the key, deadlocks are working but no alarm. I've found no end of posts about door switches failing and the door showing as open constantly, ive 1st hand experience of this now. But cannot find anything else online where the drivers door does what mine does??

Also I cannot get any life out of the alarm system but I'm wondering if the two issues are connected.

I think you'll find the alarm won't arm unless you use the key fob to operate the lock.

The cheapest solution is to get a second hand central locking unit with the matching coded fob(s) from a breaker - the unit is a straight swop for the one under your dash - it is a either a black or green (depends upon year) rectangular box approx 4"x 3" and can be slide off the black bracket located under the right hand end of the drivers side dash above the accelerator but is buried quite high up - DISCONNECT THE BATTERY BEFORE YOU REMOVE the two multi-plug connectors - you'll find it easier to put the plugs back into the replacement unit before you slide it back on the bracket as there isn't a great deal of slack on the harness.

NB it is a good idea to get the part number of the existing unit to get an exact replacement.

They don't need to be recoded to your car as the fobs are factory coded to the central locking unit.

Ahh, I had wondered that. I've read some say the key should do the alarm & others say it won't. It does do the deadlocks tho.
So, is there any way to test the rest of the alarm system 1st before changing the brain out. How do the microswitches in the door lock communicate with the car as I have 7 connections on the lock assembly, 2 pins are the door open switch the other 2 pins in the grey plug don't seem to do anything. I have tested every combination of pins with a meter & can only get a reading from the door open switch not the lock unlock switch in the mechanism or the one on the lock barrel?

I didn't realise it was that easy... I have a dead 99 V70 in the drive with 2 fobs and another 99 V70 (albeit the later one with no dizzy cap and thicker roof bars) with no fobs as a replacement.

I will give this a go and see how I get on.

You might find the wiring diagram for your model might be of some help - try this link
https://www.scribd.com/document/2878...vo-c70-s70-v70

Page 154 onward (which shows as Page 219 in the 291 page pdf.) has the relevant alarm variant connections.

If your V70 is pre August 1998 you can reprogram pre August 1998 secondhand fobs to your alarm using the method shown at post 10 for the 850
https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=115093 or you could try the variation shown at post 10 here

I stand corrected - thanks for the update - my 840 was a 1995 motor and had the re-programmable fobs - my local indie told me that the date for most of the P1s was those manufactured post August 1998 but apparently there are some still around which are "transition" variants that have earlier 850 based central locking components.

....typo for "my 840 was a 1995 motor" please read "my 850 was a 1994 motor"....

I should also add my 850's alarm could be armed by either the key in the door or the fob - if key armed it had to be key disarmed, if fob armed it had to be fob disarmed unless the alarm had been activated - in which case the only way to reset it was by unlocking the door with the key, opening and then closing the door and then using either method to re-arm it.

Mine has a similar issue, my drivers door lock cycles when I close the door but only if the the key is in the ignition, not turned on just in the ignition?!! Dosent bother me too much so I've not really looked into it, I have changed the drivers lock and servo unit for a s/h unit to no avail.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

I have a strange feeling it is the drivers door electric window unit that causes issues like this....
