Default Pilot Assist enhancement

Noticed this for the new V60:
For the EU and US, Pilot Assist is connected to the navigation system and has an ‘electronic horizon’ function that increases accuracy and performance in curves.

Western European markets benefit from Curve Speed Adaption, a function that uses map data to adapt cruising speed in curves to a comfortable level.

A potentially very useful improvement.

Do you think existing vehicles might be able to be updated.

Doubt it as I presume this change will be from MY19 onwards when Volvo change their Sat Nav systems over to TomTom>

That would likely bug me if I set the cruise to 70 and it slows to 50 just cos there is a bend in the road.....

Wonder how well that would have worked 3 weeks ago when my satnav showed the car being 20 miles from where it actually was.

When was the TomTom announcement? Volvo are moving to an Android based Sensus from 2019 although probably only on new models or existing models that get a mid-life kicker of which the XC90 would be the first. It's been assumed that Google Maps would be used with the Android based Sensus.

My source was a very knowledgeable member - Nigel Day - who posted the below on a New V60 thread on the “old” XC60 forum - see Posting No 14.
I think it is a good move for Volvo, especially as with the additional ‘Car Play’ option you will have the alternative of using Apple Maps or Android Google Maps as well........so no more excuses for getting lost!

I'd probably take TomTom or Google Maps over Here maps any day.

It'll be interesting to see exactly when and how TomTom is introduced as MY19 XC60s and XC90s will arrive in a couple of months. Will these have TomTom I wonder; there's no mention of it in the spec sheets. Also, will older cars get it and, if not, will Here updates continue to be available for the life of the car? Anyone know what mapping system is on the XC40?

Assuming the TT deal is still going ahead it would make sense to only develop it for the Android based Sensus (if that's still going ahead!).

TomTom itself claimed lifetime updates of its maps on its devices. It turns out that the 'lifetime' is determined by TomTom and they have decided that the life of many of its devices is now over. Some of these are still in the shops being sold new today and their lifetime is apparently over before it starts.

Here are some references

One

Two

Three

I strongly suspect that a similar situation will arise with Here maps as currently fitted to Volvo cars, although it is possible that some enterprising Easter European will provide a hack to enable continued updates at a cost. This is speculation on my part of course.
