Default Problem engaging 1st & reserve if engine on & cold

S40 T5 2007, update model for late 2007 to 2012. Clutch was replaced 1200 miles ago

Engaging first or reserve gears after the car has been left overnight is a problem

If the engine is turned on neither gear will engage and using first gear for about 4 miles of the journey is problematic. The further through the journey you go the easier first gear becomes. Eventually first and reverse work as normal. You can leave the car for a couple of hours and upon your return the gears still work as normal

This is the stage part

First and reverse gears will work as normal if the engine is not turned on. Turn the engine on and they will not engage.

Turn the engine off, wait a few minutes and then first gear will engage and you can drive off as normal.

Drive 5 minutes and stop. Same thing again first and reserve will work as normal if the engine is off. Turn the engine on and they will not engage.

Cars been left with a garage so they can see this for themselves as time I drive to them the roars are working a normal. Initial inspection shows nothing wrong

If anybody has any ideas what is happening please let me know?

Did it do this before the clutch replacement ?

If it only happened after the clutch replacement, I would suspect the clutch

If it happened before the clutch was changed, and changing the clutch made no difference, problem with the gearbox

Possible low gearbox low oil, or needs the gearbox oil chaning ?

That sounds almost identical to my issue, problems engaging 1/R and "sometimes OK , sometimes not" way of working. Started happening after engine was dropped and clutch+DMF changed.
Still not resolved, but I was advised few things so check them yourself:
- engine mounts (if too worn, shifter can work crooked)
- shifting cables (there is adjuster on them)
- clutch slave cylinder needs bleeding
Those all can have impact on gear shifting, but its also possible its
- clutch incorrectly installed (sticking)
- synchronisators in gbx slowly deteriorating
etc...
in my case, because whole engine was out&back, its not conclusive its ONLY clutch related. In your case, if it started immediately after clutch replacement, well... possible its internal issue (parts) or incorrect installment.

let me know if you get anywhere with it!

I had my clutch dmf and slave cylinder changed, after a while it developed a hard to engage reverse gear, usually in the morning when cold. I was just turning car on with reverse already selected ( like you works fine engine off) but it will go in gear when running if I rev to about 3-3500rpm ( not ideal) or I find pumping the clutch pedal a few times and it'll slot in fine, leading me to believe it's the fluid that needs bleeding.
