Oh OK - Thanks Clan - great info as per.
I guess what I really would like to know is whether my dealer should have at least mentioned the need for a belt and tensioner change at 54,000 miles when it was in for annual service at 53,100? Cheers Dave |

sorry Dave NO you do not need an aux belt changed at 54000 on the "old " XC90 installations , only on the models with the mounts on the cylinder head ( ie. everything other than the XC90 ) . gets confusing if i don't read the whole thread from the beginning !

mines a 2009 xc90 active premium with 91,555 miles, just had a timing belt, tensioner idle pulley etc and a water pump renewed, had a good close look at the old belt and pulleys, no signs at all of wear, cracks or bearing noises or roughness. the old water pump looked and felt like new. but got it all done for peace of mind as it was due before 10 yrs or 108000 miles. i also checked the aux belt carefully- no signs of wear of cracking either. the mechanic said the belt will be fine, it's the bearings, pulleys that fail first but you will often get warning by increased noise from them.he's been doing nothing but timing belts for 20 yrs and came highly recommended so i gotta trust the man.

Did you put a genuine Volvo waterpump on? If not, that could be a bad move as the genuine pumps hardly ever need replacing even with mega mileage on but there are reports of some aftermarket pumps seizing and taking the cambelt out with it. On my Xc70 ( sold) I changed the belt at 165k and the pump was perfect so left in situ. I changed the belt on my Xc90D5 at 119k and again the pump was perfect.,
