Default ETS light just on, car in limp home mode - advice

I have a 2001 C70 coupe with only 58k miles, 2.0 LPT engine, manual gearbox. Yesterday the ETS dash warning light came on for the first time in my ownership and the car struggles to get over 20mph. I have tried to reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery and also using a cheap code reader, but so far with no success.

Is there anything I can do as a short term measure? I realise a new/refurbished throttle assembly is the overall solution, but I just need to be able to use the car for the next short while so I can assess my options.

Many thanks.

Some say they have successfully cleaned the ETM and prolonged the lifespan of it with X miles. Short of swapping it for another one, that's pretty much all you can do.

Check with VIDA first otherwise it is guesswork but if the ETM has reached end of life there are a few possibilities including:
Replacing with used unit (may be compatibility issues)
Volvo had a software fix that I believe changed the part of the resistance surface the signal picked up from
Upgrade with a contactless sensor yourself
Send to someone to upgrade
Search this forum for more info on them all.
Good luck

Hi Tweedle,

I recently had an ETS light on a 1999 V70 AWD manual.

I think I read the codes, and it turned out to be the clutch position sensor 9472979 (not the ETM at all). That sensor is not that expensive (and sits inside the car, attached to the clutch pedal). I think I paid about £25 for a new one. Easy to fit.

I am not sure how to diagnose without reading the codes.

So get the codes read before you pay good money for a new ETM.

Hope that helps,
Steve

I had a new ETM last year.

Cost around £400 at the old MRG Volvo site. The good thing was its warranted so should anything have happened to it I could have gone back under warranty. A new ETM will need the dealer level software to make it run I understand.

I had this on my 99' V70 T5 recently. I too thought it was the dreaded ETM. Like you I had no codes.

I found tho' that the lower hose for the turbo had blown off! Jubilee clip had rusted through.

A new clip and it was purring once more.

Hope yours is as easy.
