If sunroof check drains work. Suspect rear drains go down centre post. Also remove the sill cover trim to check the sill for holes.

Mine needs clearing as water finds it's way along roof lining to roof light or fully at rear and drips onto load cover! Suspect rear sunroof drains blocked. Try to park facing downhill! One you find the leak I would grind back the rust and treat it and re paint it.

Must sort it out! Its a great workhorse.

James.
I've managed to find the issue with my sunroof. Front drains were clear I could see the water draining away very well. Parked it on a slope and water was draining away ok to the rear although I couldn't see the drain holes. It turned out that the black seal around the sunroof needed silicone right around. That's cured it. It's been bone dry since. I was surprised that I was getting quite a bit of water going underneath that seal. It didn't look too bad and I was surprised but it's definitely sorted now. The motor has gone in the damned thing. I just had it disconnected. I didn't really want a sunroof I knew it would be a pain and so it has been. if I ever need to open it I know now that you can do it by turning the screw with a big flathead screwdriver.

Sounds to me like you might be describing your heater control valve (Ask me how I know)

If so, I hope you have aircon

Edit to say actually this sounds more like the vent.

Its just a blanking plate with a rubber seal, im not going to pull it off in case it makes things worse, i will seal it with roofing sealant.

If it’s a blanking seal/cover and the water is behind it then the water must be coming in somewhere. If you seal it up then the water will still be coming in and will find somewhere else to go to. I agree with jpliddy. Remove it and have a look behind it.
