At least changing the alternator is quite easy. Try to get an identical replacement. Volvo used (at least) both Denso and Bosch. If you fit the wrong one you may find you’ll struggle to get the belt tension right without replacing the bracket and or the belt.

It sounds, pun intended, as if the alternator is still wet, it might not be damaged or not badly damaged.
It might work or be economically repairable when it has eventually dried out. Like an electronic device that someone known to me dropped in to a volume of water. Eventually it came back in to daily use in their life. . |

I'd bite the bullet and buy a brand new battery, and later a new charger £60ish, I got mine delivered next day for £56 (I think) UASA from a shop with a weird name.

Brief conclusion is it seems the alternator is FUBAR and possibly taken the battery with it. https://advancedbatterysupplies.co.uk/product-tag/027 Staqndard battery for a B230 powered 740/940, choice of several there all with free next day delivery. Used that places a few times now. As for the alternator, a decent autoelectricians should be able to diagnose the fault (probably rectifier gone short circuit) and fix it and/or supply a reconditoned unit - almost certainly a Bosch on the 740 which i'm fairly sure Matts car is.
