Exclamation Volvo cars to take over control from human drivers

Hi all,

Volvo have introduced a new system where by the car will take over control from the driver under certain conditions...

https://www.media.volvocars.com/glob...on-distraction

Limiting speed and eventually pulling the car over...

I'd like to know how the system distinguishes between my wife's driving and that of a p*ssed person.

Understand the philosophy, but I am a little dubious. The accidents with the Boeing 737 M8 were apparently due the aircraft sensors and software countermanding the human pilots to the extent they couldn't regain control.

At the risk both of going wildly off-topic and also speculating solely on the basis of what's in the media, I feel that the issue with the 737 Max was the way automation was implemented rather than with automation itself. A system classified as 'hazardous' should never have been designed to follow a single sensor input (there were two available on the aircraft which could have been compared). Also, Boeing appears to have decided that no operator intervention/overide would ever be required if the system failed (hence why they excluded any mention of MCAS from transition training or the manual).

It's this last point that should be the focus of any successful introduction of automation (whether aircraft or cars) - what are the potential failure modes for the automated system? What level of operator (driver) intervention might be required? Is it reasonable to expect a driver to provide such intervention?

In another thread there has been discussion of driver monitoring of level 2/level 3 autonomous systems. The human factors issues around monitoring automation are very significant... I'd be happy with the Volvo drugs and alcohol nanny provided I was assured about the rigour of the safety assessments that underpinned it.

Your wife and my wife are twins separated at birth..

On topic:

”..allow the car to intervene if a clearly intoxicated or distracted driver does not respond to warning signals and is risking an accident involving serious injury or death..”

“..Examples of such behavior include a complete lack of steering input for extended periods of time, drivers who are detected to have their eyes closed or off the road for extended periods of time, as well as extreme weaving across lanes or excessively slow reaction times.”

Volvo has my full support on this. Unlike the 180km/h limit thing..

However- there’s the legal aspect as well: ”The company wants to start a conversation about whether car makers have the right or maybe even the obligation to install technology in cars that changes their drivers’ behaviour.”

HELL NO!

I've got a better idea - how about the human can override the machine if he decides the machine isn't as capable?

Since when did a machine outrank me? Machines are subserviant to humans. I am at liberty, a machine is not. I do not have to do what a machine says, and if I do it's because I CHOOSE to, not because I'm forced to.

Being a slave to a machine makes me a slave to it's programmer by proxy.

NO! NO! NO!

I am seriously disturbed by how willing people are to throw away their liberty.

Bloody sheep, the lot of you. Learn to make decisions, learn to make the right ones, and learn to accept the consequences for doing so. Own your sh1t and stop blaming everyone else, especially machinery. Take responsibility for yourselves.
