Default 1973 P1800ES Chassis number plate

I'm new to Volvos & new to forums so please bear with me. My P1800ES chassis number plate has been lost. This particular plate does not seem to be available from any of the parts suppliers. Can anybody provide me with a photo & a brief description? My chassis number is 3655 but would it have any zeros preceding it, are the numbers stamped from the front or reverse stamped & what size are the numbers??? So many questions for such a small item. Hope someone can help, many thanks JimR emailjimajb@gmail.com

Maybe you're not looking in the right spot, although I haven't a clue as to where the right spot might be.

I found it by Googling 1800ES chassis number. That way is usually quicker than doing it on the forum.

Jim,

The thread that Derek provided for you has a very comprehensive answer to your question, keep trying to access it if you can.

To answer your initial query, the embossed black and silver plate which is missing from your car's pedal box doesn't contain the chassis number on an ES, it simply gives the model type, colour, trim code and any special 'S' codes applicable to the car when built (factory options).

The chassis number is on a separate plate which was rivetted to the left hand windscreen pillar inside the car, but many have been removed as they do look a bit unsightly. You will see the two small holes where it used to be if yours is missing!
The full chassis (VIN) number on ES is also stamped into the offside door hinge pillar between the hinges and very close to where the weatherstrip pushes on. It's not very heavily embossed and if your car has been repainted it will probably not be immediately visible.

Rub the paint away with emery tape or wet/dry paper and you will find it eventually when you are almost at bare metal!. The full VIN number is a combination of the model type followed by either ** or 00 and your four digit chassis number (3655), the whole VIN will therefore be something like 1834362Y003655.

There may also be a small steel embossed plate still screwed to your pedal box (4 digits) painted in your car's colour, this is simply a body production number and has no bearing on your full chassis number as bodies were not necessarily used in sequence for assembly in Gothenburg.

Hope this helps?

Paul

Karl Eric Malberg was also helpful when I was trying to clarify my numbers. He sent me the following. Hopefully I will be able to share the images. If I have been successful the images should now be attached.
'You will also have the chassis number stamped to the right of the radiator or on the right hand side A-pillar between the hinges.'

good luck, Kay

All ES's have the VIN/chassis number only on the door pillar, as do the very last 1972 E's produced. All other coupe's had it stamped into the radiator brace panel as shown.
