Insurance “approved” bodyshop woes
My 2010/11 XC90 Exec is in the body shop for some work following a minor accident.
Given the age I agreed to e-sures approved body shop doing the work rather than Volvo I’m yet to see the results but so far they say they can’t get a replacement side step (it’s got a scratch) but more drastically have asked if they can spray the mirror covers body colour rather than get a chrome replacement (they say they can’t order a replacement chrome one but I think they just ordered the wrong one). I’ve told them no I’ve never had work like this done at a non-franchised dealer partly because of warranty issues but I’d add to that the issues of getting work done on a relatively unusual vehicle. Goodness knows what it will look like when I pick it up.... |

I had a similar experience here in Edinburgh. My rear bumper was damaged in a rear end crash and also the towbar. The non Volvo body shop replaced the towbar with a different type that didn't fit my caravan and so they had to change it. However they had already cut a hole in the plastic undershield at the rear to allow the different towbar to fit. Also the exhaust banged against the towbar, they took the car away to fix this but it still banged when I got it back (when the exhaust got hot and stretched a bit it touched the towbar bracket - it was ok when cold). I had to fix it myself as I was sick of them taking my car away and being left with a 5 seater car as we are a family of six. The silver lining was they somehow managed to accidentally get the rear parking sensor to work - that was 3 years ago and it's still working!

Easy to fit, they just clip in

The point is the reason these places are “approved” is that they cut corners and use the cheapest parts they can find (and I accept they do so to bring insurance costs down).

And the amazing thing is you dont have to use them if you are not happy with them.....Tell your insurance company where you want it repaired.
