Interested to know who tows with their XC60/90 and how it fare? Diesel and Petrol

My wife has this great idea about towing, I have said we bought the T5 should have the D4/5 for that sort of activity!

For me the towing capacity is not high enough to bother fitting a hitch. My trailers are rated to 3.5 tons and are often fully laden.

2018.5 MY XC90 D5 tows 2000kg twin axle caravan with no dramas in fact is better than I had expected - it just seems to get on with it without any drama. This car follows a v6 3 litre Touareg but tbh I think i wd rather tow with the Volvo - it is certainly less ‘pushed around’ by the caravan than the VW (due to longer wheelbase I guess but that would be the same for diesel or petrol).

My XC90 is the best tow car I have towed with, plenty of power torque and pace, it really is effortless and just does what's required, I highly recommend the Volvo retractable towbar that intergrates with all volvo systems when hitched up and is very easy to use and very neat when not in use.
Not for towing 3.5 ton farm trailers but for caravans etc you wont go wrong.

I had the electrical deployable tow bar fitted before I picked the car up for the cycle carrier. When it’s plugged in the car seems to default to a towing map which disables a lot of systems on the car which would make sense if towing a hefty load. However for just carrying a few bikes on the back I wish it would just remain in normal mode. Anybody else found this when towing?

As volvocamper and nu11eaf have said the XC90 tows effortlessly we have a twin axle Buccaneer Clipper with a max weight of 2000kg. Ours is the D5 so can't comment on the T5.

The towing with a diesel vs petrol debate is not as relevant if the car is an auto...

I'm not attempting to start a debate just wondering as my wife is interested in a caravan but we opted for the T5 rather than diesel.

For interest why does the auto make any difference?

Autos in general are much easier to tow with so its probably because the auto box does all the work selecting the correct gear etc. I struggled initially with a Diesel manual (achieving 25 to 30mpg towing) for a year before taking the plunge and moving to a Petral auto (Audi RSQ3 that managed 15-18 mpg when towing ). I have no doubt the T5 would be more than up to the task, if a little thirsty.

I cant wait to get my V90 D4 and start towing with it.
