Unhappy Fuel Consumption

My 2007 new model D5 (185hp) V70 Geartronic is only returning 32MPG on a run. Its been back to have updated software but with little effect. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Literature claims 39MPG.

Don't know if it helps but my experience with a 2008 S80 D5 auto (as I've said before):

18mpg around town, 28mpg combined and around 37 on a long 70mph run

That was with a brand new engine, taking it to around 2k miles with a couple of long motorway runs and a fair bit of urban and mixed driving too.

IMO, 32mpg on a run (how much of a run, at what speeds?) might indicate a problem, but there's too many variables to be sure.

In my S80 D5 Geartronic I can achieve high 20s to 30 mpg around town. It drops if it's stop start stuff to low 20s. On a run I get an indicated average of 45mpg at a cruise controlled 75mph. If I switch to manual I can achieve higher figures around town. Mileage is just over 10k. I'm getting around 430 miles to the tank around town equating to an average of 23mpg. It isn't brilliant, but economy wasn't the reason I bought it. Comfort and practicality were my main reasons and it does them with ease.

That's crazy! Me and my housemate both get mid-high 30s (MPG) out of our PETROL S70 and C70 on the motorway at 70mph...the latter being a T5 auto. My combined MPG is typically 28-30 (mixed driving), and I'm not shy with the right foot. Ryan does mainly town driving (and Lincoln traffic is pretty bad), and averages around 20mpg.

Either the new cars are far heavier than the older ones (which I'm pretty sure they're not), or something is wrong.

cheers

James

Those are good figures Jimbo. For comparison my 850 T5 will manage 23 around town and 32 on a 75mph run. With diesel prices staying hiked, the benefits seem to be diminishing! The weight of new cars surprises me every time though. My mums 08 C30 is only about 100 kilos off my 850 afaik.

Default 2005 Coated Diesel Particulate Filter

Looks like this is the thing. If it keeps going in to recycle mode the mpg will suffer badly.

Poor mpg - http://tinyurl.com/72eu65

Particulate filter is standard
All versions of the new diesel engine have a particulate filter as standard equipment. It very effectively removes soot particulates from the exhaust gases, with filtration efficiency above 95 percent.

The filter is a CDPF – Coated Diesel Particulate Filter – in which a special coating helps burn the particulates. Therefore, no additives are needed, and the filter requires no maintenance. Burning away soot particulates takes approximately 20 minutes and occurs automatically at 500 to 1000km intervals, depending on driving conditions.

Can't agree with that. I have had numerous V70 T5s over the years and they always return about 25mpg. And that's never re-setting the trip computer so is for all types of driving. The D5 is by comparison very disappointing...

With the difference in price between oil and petrol I will certainly return to a V70 T6 in a few months time...

you havent seen the way i drive, my old 2 litre manual mazda 626 used to average 17 mpg and you think id get 25mpg out of a 2.5 v70 that weighs twice as much............................i dont think so!
