The D5 came to life in 2002 so is in indeed an old engine relatively speaking. However there are many engines still in use today that go back 20 years or more, but have had a program of technical updates. The 2.0 4-pot diesel that was used by Volvo in it's models until around 2010 is derived from the Peugeot/Citroen XUD units first introduced in 1982 - it even retains the 88mm stroke.

The issue for me is on later incarnations, the strive for cleaner emissions ironically seems to be at the expense of fuel consumption - it's the same with trucks. The first 163 BHP D5 was by some margin the most economical and refined of them all.

One thing I did not take into account is I fill up when I have around 60,70 miles still left in the tank so it could be more like 400miles from a tank.

I had ---- left in the tank today (I done this on purpose) and the light was on and the needle was on the bottom half of the red.

I placed a full tank of fuel (1st click of pump to stop) in the car this morning which was:

61.64 litres
£1.329 £/l
Total, £81.92

Car states I have 520miles till empty but fully understand this can change depending on driving style.

We do come from a 400bhp 535d twin turbo bmw f11 and a 517bhp v10 M5 so our driving style could need a tweak maby?

Also our car has only had 1 owner from new (not played about with) and does have a 'polstar' emblem on the tailgate, can you tell if it's a genuine one as this could have an effect on mpg?

If I post back my miles then we can work out my MPG if you guys can help work out??

Ryan.
Hi guys, I now have some details if some one can help work out my MPG.

As per above i filled up around 2 weeks ago:

61.64 litres
£1.329 £/l
Total, £81.92

I had to fill up again today as my orange light came on

61.00 litres
£1.329 £/l
Total £81.07

and I had covered 417 miles.

can any one work this out, must be around 30mpg if that sounds right?

Again the car is used on some short and long trips from shopping in town and 20 min drive on a12 etc

I make it 31 miles per gallon:

61 litres used over 417 miles = 6.83 miles per litre,

as 4.546 litres in one gallon = 6.83 * 4.546 mpg = 31 mpg

so what is this mpg figure like for a xc90 d5??

around 400miles per tank can't be too bad?

Thank you very much, I have been doing a bit of reading on this forum and it would seem if you have the early 163bhp d5 you can see an extra 5mpg+ where the later 185+bhp is a little thirsty.

good to see i am getting about the same as others.

thank u.
