By far the best I’ve come across is the GROM unit. Not cheap at £119 but you get what you pay for. CD digital quality, charges your phone/iPod whilst playing music and steering wheel controls still work. Fantastic piece of kit.

Takes around 30 mins to install. Don’t need to disconnect the battery just take the stereo fuse out. This is what I would buy if I were you and wanted to take advantage of the 803’s awesome sound quality - Spotify sounds amazing on it!

I'm not bothered about controlling the auxiliary device from the head-unit just merely connecting it as a music source :-)

Cheers and thanks in advance...
I'm currently working on a drop-in PCB that you can use for this, similar to the GROM and XCarLink devices, but at a significantly lower cost.

Is Bluetooth or 3.5mm input preferred?

I'd suggest if possible, both?

But if it's one or the other, I'd push for direct connection; you can buy bluetooth receiver boxes on ebay for very little.

If you go for Bluetooth, I strongly suggest you ensure it supports the AptX codec, or maybe even the newer Bluetooth codec (Sony LDAC). Why? Because the billy-basic SBC streaming codec has poor quality.

The chipset I'm looking at using supports AptX, and adding another input is pretty simple, I'm gonna start a blog to keep people updated on progress, not sure when it'll be up, but if you send me a PM I'll send you the link when it's available

I've now put the blog online at x13.me, I'll be posting info there as I work on the project, my initial batch will likely be ten units, as that's the minimum order for a lot of the components I use

That's really interesting, I like the sound of that a lot! It might be good if you start a new thread on that project as I imagine it'll definitely attract some interest.

While you pour over the specification of melbus and start probing, one thought that I always had was:
The radio has got a 'md chgr' indicator on the display. I wonder if this is connected, and if there's any provision for minidisk changers on the melbus. I wonder if this might unlock the ability to get title text or similar to display from the 'md changer', allowing you to perhaps put in a now playing text? Equally there's 'dab' there as well so there might be fun to be had there.

Good luck, I'm interested to learn how you get on!

I can indeed emulate the minidisk changer, I just need to find a scrap one to probe and pull the data from, as for track info, I think I've got it sorted out, but I'll need some time to find a working bluetooth module and interface with it.

My primary issue right now is a lack of R&D funds, hence not promoting the project too heavily

I am interested but I am not on Tumbler and don't plan on it, so is a PM possible when you're ready to go?
