Mr Barclaycard has just taken a good beating from my local independent dealer.
Just under £400 for the job to be done. It was about £250 + stealth tax for the lock alone.

Now where's all this overtime I crave !

Talking Ignition lock problem.

I have read this thread with a lot of interest, also the links to past threads on the subject of the key position not going past 1. I have just purchased a XC90 (1 week ago) and the lock failed this afternoon, no phone and no knowledge so had to walk home about a mile or so. First real look at these fora, what a wealth of knowledge and experience, found the answer to my problem straight away, common enough by the look of it. I couldn't get the plate off so tapped it hard with a spanner to move the offending broken piece, that worked well enabling me to drive home. Further research gave me the method to remove the steel plate which I will do in the morning.
Many thanks for a great site, so very helpful, thanks to all of you for asking the questions and even more thanks to those who gave such brilliant answers along with great pictures, they are worth a thousand words, but you may know this already, lol.
Regards to all
Cal

Just to insure your understanding is correct, you are to loosen the steel plate, not remove it. IIRC it is the rear facing end that one pries on. There is a little slot which invites the entry of screwdriver blade, but it will only loosen when the dimples in the pot metal case which pinch the steel plate are sufficiently relieved.

Hi Jim314, I thought I read that the steel plate could be left off altogether, I have just removed mine completely with the intention of not refitting it, I think somebody determined that it unnecessary?

I must be wrong. I thought the steel plate on the bottom was held internally on the forward end by being connected to some internal parts. In the case of my wife's XC90 I pried down the rear end and the forward end resisted so I stopped.

The reason you met some resistance is a "peg" formed on the steel bottom plate and engages something in the barrel (but I have no idea of its function). Levering down at front and rear of the steel plate will allow this peg to disengage easily, the ignition lock has all the functions leaving the plate off.

There is a coil spring which sits on the inside top surface of the hardened steel plate and presses on something above it. If you remove the steel plate, then this spring would have to be removed too. So this spring is not necessary to the full function of the lock?

I think Volvo over designed this lock, probably to thwart car thieves, but the result was failures of the mechanism.
