Default Amazon modern engine options !!

Hi, Ive been offered a rather ratty Amazon and like the idea of replacing the engine with a more modern unit, preferably diesel,
I would prefer to take a whole rear drive engine and gearbox from a single donor vehicle so there was no messing with adapter plates etc.
Ive been considering a ford sierra/p100 setup, with type 9 box which is old enough technology but good power and economy (ideal for running on bio oil).

Id like to hear your sugestions of engines and pros and cons.

Sorry if this upsets the purists but the origninal engine is not an option.

thanks jim

Mate of mine once 'popped'? a Sierra diesel 2ltr/box in an estate with not much cutting involved as far as I remember. Never be afraid to cut up a perfectly good car unless it's the last one left, ever! Do like to play devil's advocate when it comes to car purists.

i think youll find there isnt so many purists on here . if it is a good one i wouldnt devalue it by putting a diesel in it . if its to keep you on the road cheaply , i say go for it .

the d24 six probably wouldnt fit , but you might find it would fit on the volvo gearbox (m46) , and cure some installation probs , i also think the sierra diesel is crap .

well i'd go for the Modern D5 and 960 6 cylinder manual gearbox no question about it .... same weight as your unit and will use half the fuel and double your performance :-)
Yes the ford unit is a serious backward step ...

Thanks for the quick replies, idealy it needs to be a daily driver. A V8 would be ace but not an option really.

I would prefer diesel, so i can run it on oils and bios, the orig engine is shot, and i like the idea of having a go at fitting a diesel.

I remember reading someplace about someone fitting A VW TDI unit to an Amazon. I think he was Dutch.
