Default Towing with a XC70

Hi,
Currently have a 2018 XC90 on a lease, which is ending in March.
Thinking about buying a 2011 XC70. The only trouble is that I need to tow my twin axle eldiss crusader caravan which has a weight of around 1,860 kg.

Am I asking for trouble? I’m quite experienced at towing. Don’t particularly want a SUV anymore, plus my budget is around £8000.

Cheers, Jamie

If it's auto you have a tow capasity of 2000 or 2200kg, sorry cannot remember which, it changed with the year about that time, don't think you will find a 2011 manual but if you do the tow capasity is only 1800kg.

I have an 09 2wd xc70 and tow my 1650kg coachman with no problem at all, stable and will maintain legal limit in all conditions if required to, you of course pay the price in fuel. Get about 28/30 towing out of my D5, 40 ish average solo.

If you go to towcar.info you can put in your car and caravan combo and it’ll tell you how well suited they are.

Agreed but the 80% ratio is only a recomendation.

My landrover weighing 2.25 ton is rated to tow 3.5 ton, making a train weight of 5.75 ton. With grandfather rights or hgv licence this is perfectly possible and safe. An awful lot of farmers do it every market day.

If you get the D5 AWD I think the towing weights are 2.0t for manual, 2.2t for automatic. This is because the maximum towing weight is based on what they car can reliably set off from rest on a 10% gradient...

As has been said the 80% caravan weight rule is a good "rule of thumb" but not law... it has to some extent been surpassed by trailer stability aids, traction/ stability control and self leveling suspension. There is still no substitute however for a safe, thoughtful, considerate driver.

If you get it - make sure it has genuine Volvo towbar electrics fitted - that way the trailer stability assist (TSA) program will be activated when you hook up.

Hi Jamie,

I have a tandem crusader, but tow it with the previous generation XC90. It might be harder to jump back a generation since you have the current version. But it's very capable. I have a standard auto 1800kg max V70 which I have only used to tow livestock trailers, again very capable, but I feel more comfortable towing in the XC90.

I used to have a 163bhp P2 XC70 D5 & towed my track toy on a twin wheeled trailer loads of places/miles. Total weight was probably around the same as your caravan (bit naughty on a 163) but I found that it was actually a very smooth and controlled ride. Only time it felt a bit out of sorts was when I misjudged the location of the loaded car and it was a bit squirrelly but moving the car a bit on the trailer and it was fine again. I don't think you'd go wrong on a balanced P3 with 205bhp
