You can tell a mile away, that they are the 320 calipers, just be looking at the shape! The standard 278/300 mm caliper has one cut out through which you can see the pad. These have none.

Hi Daim,

I just took it for granted that all the S40/V50 T5 models came with the 320mm discs and callipers - apparently not though? I don't see where the difference would have come in either. Why would some have 320mm and others only 300mm? Mine is a very early model with a chassis number less than 1500.

Depended on the wheel size AFAIK.

Mine definitely has 300mm discs

No, it depends on a lot of things. I know for fact, that the S40 and V50 AWD come with 320 mm. The C30 T5 comes on 300 mm. The C70 T5 on 320 mm. And even with other engines it is everything else than clear... Sometimes a 2.0D has 278 mm others have 300 mm. There really isn't much logical sense in Volvos brake system choice amongst the models...

Just for info for others, I puchased a set of Convector 16" alloys to use as winter wheels last year from Johnsons Volvo (Trader on here) - LINKY!

The 320mm setup WILL fit under the Convector 16" alloys if you need them to. Lucky as I never gave it a thought at the time.

Just thought I'd give a little update. When I done this upgrade I went for a set of EBC solid discs and redstuff pads. What I would consider not a very long amount of time the discs are shot! I have very bad high spots on the discs themselves and get very bad steering wheel wobble when braking.

After doing some research it seems that over on the ST forum the best discs and pads you can get are genuine OEM parts. I've found an eBay seller that does front discs and pads brand new for £114 plus p+p. I haven't been down to my main dealers yet to get a quote direct, but I plan on doing so.

I've used EBC in the past and that depending on the application its hit or miss. The last set I used on another vehicle that I used on trackdays the EBC items were fantastic but on the Volvo doing daily driving have been rubbish.

Anyone looking to do this, please don't bother with EBC parts.

Sorry to Hijack this post. I've read through the thread and everyone seems to be giving different information on this matter.

I have a Volvo S40 2.0d 2008 (R-design) and have the 300mm front brake discs and 280mm rears, standard with 17" alloys. I'm looking at getting the ST225 Brake discs however they are 320mm(F) & 280mm(R), I've already checked my brake pads all round and they still have plenty of life left in them so don't need changing as of yet.

So my question is "what exactly is needed for the ST225 brake conversion", carriers/calipers? Do bigger rotors mean bigger calipers too?

The rears don's change. You need:

- 320mm front calipers and carriers from either a Focus ST or S40/V50/C70 (not any other Volvo model as the carrier bolt spacing will differ)
- 320mm discs (Genuine Volvo are best - made by ATE)
- Pads (again genuine volvo best)

Optionally:

- new backing plates/stone guards as the old ones will be rusted and too small.

If you don't replace the backing plates then remove the old ones but your new brake system will be much more susceptible to damage and corrosion as a result. They cost about £70 to replace with new genuine Volvo ones IIRC.

It's a very worthwhile upgrade. The difference on my old S40 between 300 and 320mm discs was significant. The 300mm setup was nothing short of dire. I bought reconditioned Focus ST calipers and carriers from an eBay trading company and the genuine pads and discs via a Volvo dealer selling parts on eBay. The backing plates came from the local Volvo dealer.

Just to add my 2c here, although I agree that OEM parts are top notch quality, I wouldnt get fixated on dealership ones just to have Volvo box. You can get set of coated Brembo discs or ATE for 60euros (!) as I checked recently, just do some search online, same for pads (ATE ceramic 60euros, standard ATE even less) and thats a fraction of the price you would spend in dealership.
Front calipers are also ATE brand but as said above - your only option is to take them off from ST or 320mm version of P1 car.
