Smile Belt sqeal/chirping from cold start.....

Hi all
New C30 R-design owner here...its a 2 litre petrol in Ice white..late 2011 with 23000 on the clock, looks very stylish and drives like a dream...but I have a slight issue, its a chirping from the engine at a cold start....and thats every time from cold.....but it disappears altogether when at working temp..again every time.....I have already taken it to a local Volvo dealer for them to have a look see and they said there was no noise apparent....but it was at its working temp when I dropped it off so hence no noise....short of leaving it with them overnight for them to hear it from cold could anybody shed any light on this fault for me.....thanks in advance for any replies...

I'm sure you've told them its only when cold, if so, just tell them to keep it over night as you mentioned. It'll most likely be a belt or pulley.

Probably the alternator belt/tensioner as the 2 litre petrol there is no cambelt it is a chain.

And due to issues with noise there are 3 variants of tensioners...

They should know all about this ! The cure is to fit the latest belt and tensioner .. It comes as a kit with bolts etc in one box .The "new " tensioner is actualy the original spring loaded type re-issued !

It isn't, is it? So that makes the factory kit from 2007/2008 the standard "current change"?

Well, I must say, I have had no issues with mine in the last 5.5 years...

yes i was surprised too , perhaps the materials are different .. Chirping was a problem on the early ones that is why they changed it to the fixed idler with a stretch belt .. The cause was water running down the inner wing from the gap at the side of the bonnet , it splashed down over the belt , there was a mod to fit a water guide down the inner wing to keep the water away from the belt ..

As said, my car is a 2007 model built 2006 and it has the standard pulley with belt... Don't forget, that there was also the hydraulic one as well...

The hydraulic one was also used on those versions, where neither the tensioner belt nor the belt tensioner would work right. A friend has one fitted and it still isn't quiet. It is kind of like the tensioner used on an old B6304F for the cambelt...
