V50 diesel seized.

Hi All,

I have been a bit lax in checking the ever increasing oil level on my 54 plate V50 2.0D.
Last week, whilst going around a corner, some of the excess oil/fuel passed the piston rings, resulting in a cloud of smoke and the car accelerating uncontrollably, before I had time to re-act, the engine seized. Dropped the sump a couple of days ago, to discover that all the conrods are bent and motor is locked solid.



This leads to my question, have been looking at second-hand engines, they all seem to be around the £1200-1500 mark. Is there a compatible Ford block that I could use (Focus?)? These seem cheaper and more plentiful (would be using all the ancilleries from original Volvo motor).


I'm prepared for this idea to be shot down in flames! But have read that the V50 uses a lot of Focus components.

Same engine as Peugeot , Ford and some Mazdas maybe even Citroen and Renault. So the Focus 2.0 lump should work as long as the mountings for gearbox are the same.

Yeh there will be plenty of engines the same if your just after the bare engine. Sorry cant help with what they will be out of.

Hope you don't mind a couple of further questions:

Do you know if they used the same block for different HP motors (ie power gained by using larger turbo/different ECU settings etc) or are they output specific?


And, what would be the most effective way of identifing a suitable block? are the ID numbers generic through all marques or do I simply rely on the shape of rocker covers/sump/injector mounts etc, from a vehicle of similar age and capacity?

Ive just had a look on Autodata for you, to see if engine codes between Volvo/ Ford/Peugeot matched in any way. Unfortunately that would be too easy and they dont.

Volvo have 2 engine codes (searched 2005 V50):

136ps- D4204T
133ps- D4204T2

Ford have numerous (searched 2005 Focus):

136ps- G6DA, G6DB, G6DD.
133ps- G6DC, G6DE, G6DF.

Peugeot (searched 307, 407, C8 all had the RHR option):

136ps- RHR

I would imagine all of the above engines are the same, the different codes will be for different bolt on parts ie turbos etc. That will also be the difference in the horsepower figures, either software or bolt on parts you wont be using anyway.

At least that should help you be able to track down some engines to have a look at!

according to log book, car was first registered Sept 04, do you know if this makes any differece to those numbers?

how do I tell if mine is D4204T or D4204T2?, have looked for a number on engine to no avail.

I am guessing you will also need a new set of injectors (or you old one repaired).
