having just had a auto 163 D5 for a week in place of my auto 185 i found it averaged 34.9 mpg in place of the 185s 30.9 (both via the computer) i also found the engine to be underpowered compared to the 185 although i think this may have been more gearbox related then engine although it did seam reluctant to rev compared to mine this was perticularly noticable when pulling away and on the motorway. it was quieter then mine (due to it not reving so much mainly i think) also the 163 did have 113k on it which may have made a differance
given the choice of 4-5mpg and the extra power i have in mine i was more then happy to give the 163 back and have my 185 back and if i owned a 163 i would HAVE to have it remapped asap (and before people go moaning about how they get 500mpg out of there 163 this is a week long average of me driving it exactly as i do my car on the same roads so im sure if u lent me ur 163 geartronic for a week id get the same)

My experience on mpg with V70..............
Generally 8-10mpg difference between EuIII 163bhp Generation 2 and EuIV 185bhp Generation 3. It should be noted that
Have yet to see a true 50+mpg on a long run with Generation 3 whilst could annihilate 50+mpg with Generation 2 and even eek out 67mpg over 450+ miles. London-Manchester-London on a tank full! By the way - black cars look great when detailed, but are hard work to keep up with |

King Quick tuning box on Euro 3 D5 V70
I have a King Quick plug in box on my D5 V70 163hp, and had it for 1 year now. Economoy having worked it out properly and not using the computer rarely goes below 44mpg.
The performance from standard is a revelation, its addictive. |

I've got a 2003 auto D5 that's been remapped by BSR from 163 up to 196bhp. Currently I'm getting 39.5 mpg around town and, 3 weeks into ownership, I'm really pleased with the way it goes. It's done 113k with no issues so far............famous last words!

Not sure if it is due to the AWD, but the revs my engine does (D5 163hp, geartronic) are silly high in my opinion.
It does ~2500 revs at 120km/h (75mph) in 5th. That's the same as my (4 speed auto!!!) petrol Mondeo. How can I ever expect decent economy at those revs? Defeats the diesel (high torque, low revs) purpose... |
