A friend sent me a video of his 144 going round the Nurburgring on 165s with standard height suspension but a few tweaks. Convinced me to stick with 165s and standard height, it handled superbly when properly set up.

Yes, good handling and manners is more suspension than grip.

Thanks everyone - in the end I went for a new set of Pirelli P1s in 185x65x15 and first impressions are very favourable - took it for a 20-30mile journey yesterday and although dry weather, the car seemed much nicer to drive. The ride height seems pretty much a it was and the P1 tread pattern looks in keeping with the period, I checked the speedo reading against an iPhone GPS App and it seems to be fairly consistent.
I must add that the friend who changed the tyres for me said he had been able to put his hand through the sidewall of one of the Michelin's that came off - so I think I'm pretty fortunate to have decided to change them when I did..!! Just need to adjust the timing now as she runs on a bit sometimes when hot.... |
