its a compression engine

you have to compress the air for it to burn the diesel, if the glow plugs are knackered your starter is doing all the compressing to generate the heat

My D5 literarily takes about 2 revolutions (if that) and it fires right up
It's possible the glow plugs might have been changes in the past but I don't know that (until the old ones are out) so I might as well chuck a New set of good quality glow plugs in and know they are done.

my mondeo ones were very pricey

Yes ... both Petrol & Diesel ones but these were on fairly newish, well maintained cars so no real nightmares of seized Diesel injectors, M-B "Black Death", etc.. The worst ones I did were actually on a 2010 BMW X5M Petrol V8 (the one with the F10 M5 V8 Twin Turbo engine) mainly due to restricted access. Specialist removal tools very much required

To be honest most modern Diesel injectors are "very pricey" due to their complexity and high pressures they operate at.
