My PV444 has a Bosch charging relay. Although the ammeter on the dash indicated that the car would charge, the car seemed to have a weak start after running and I thought it might actually be running off of the battery. Putting on the headlights, the ammeter would fall into discharge territory.
I pulled the cover off of the charging relay and internally things look clean. But after failing to ferret out how to properly test and adjust the relay, I simply cleaned all of the contacts. Voila! Now it seems to be charging at a distinctly stronger level – at least as measured by the dashboard ammeter gauge. I like it when I can accidentally fix things by accident! We have had glorious New England weather for the last few days, so I have driven the PV444 to work. Not far, but right through the center of town. With the pandemic, people on the street enjoying the weather and walking their dogs. Lots of looks, waives and thumbs up for the car.
In the warm weather, it starts right up and I'm beginning to get used to how it feels to drive. I'm a member of a Facebook enthusiasts group that has been doing a social distancing drive every weekend with up to 200 cars and they are promoting a drive to my area this weekend. They all drive modern exotic and performance cars. I'd love to show up in the PV. A few years ago I was at a cars & coffee and the guy with the Trabant had a crowd around his car while no one paid attention to the Massarati parked in the next space. Alas, I am heading north and won't be home to attend the event. Checked the oil yesterday and was 1/2 quart down. The engine doesn't seem to leak or burn much oil, but I do seem to have an oily mist deposit in the engine bay. |

Lovely, but then it would look good in front of any house.

I think my car has a parasitic battery drain. After sitting for a few days the battery is too weak to start the car.
I think the control box is working properly, so a bit puzzled as to where there might be a draw. |

How old or new is the battery?

On my 940 I have removed the fuse for clock as that seemed to be draining battery. Now I always disconnect the battery when not using car

I suppose I need to do further investigation on the battery.
The battery itself is undated, but I found a receipt from 2007 that seems to correlate. But the battery looks quite nice - almost new - and I think it is just getting broken in. I have the generator and control box. No clock. I'll need to get out the multimeter and do some readings over time. |
