I’d rather run winter in winter and summer in summer rather than a jack of all trades, master of none.

Also my summer wheels are diamond cut and will suffer with salt and white worm.

Also, 19” winter tyres are cheaper to wear/replace than 20” summer tyres.

Each to their own, but I much prefer winter tyres in winter... I’ve driven round “4x4 SUVs” in fwd cars... if they have the wrong tyres.

Agree, much the same in a V8 RWD car in the snow which had winter tyres on it and had brilliant stability. On the flip side I once drove an F Pace on the supplied summer tyres (loan car) in the snow and it was scary.

I must try all seasons tyres but most of what I have read suggests they are best with light cars on high profile tyres.

The VOL mark simply tells you that it is 'approved' by Volvo not that it is the only tyre you can use.
Some folk like to have everything on their vehicle as OEM.
All,

thanks for your answers, much appreciated.
I guess it was just an outfall of me reading somewhere on the internet, that newer Volvos are just more sensitive to tires than other cars, but this doesn't seem to be the case.

Just to get a head start on the winter season, my dealer advised me not to buy smaller wheels than 20", his argument was that "the model is born with 20", so don't buy any smaller than that...."
My impression was that he didn't really knew that much about the technical details about the vehicle....

Is 20" the smallest that will fit on a XC90 B5 MY20 R design?

Two things to consider here:

1) XC90 can be had with 18inch wheels in other markets - but perhaps someone else knows if the B6 has some special Brake discs which would require a larger rim.

2) if Volvo don’t sell those wheel sizes in the UK then you’ll have to inform your insurance company if you fit other wheel sizes as that is classed as a modification to the vehicle, if you don’t and you have an accident they could fail to pay out/ cover your liability.

I'm in the NLD

Our insurance here don't care about wheelsizes.

I’ve just bought a set of 19” Momentum 6 spoke wheels exactly for this purpose.
Picked up a mint set on eBay for £500.

Will take the tyres off (sell on eBay) and buy winters in July/August when they are lowest priced.

Like so:

So the 19s will replace my 20s over winter.

True, however Volvo do sell 18" wheels for at least some XC90s (D5 & T6, not T8, don't know about other engines). I bought a package set of 18" Volvo wheels and winter tyres from the dealer which I swap with the standard 19" summer wheels and tyres.
