Default Radiator Replacement 940 2l Petrol - thermoswitch?

Over lockdown the radiator has developed a small leak, judging by the drips under the car and the rusty residue on the plastic side tanks (passenger side).

Looks a relatively straightforward job and it will provide the opportunity to finally do the coolant flush and replace the thermostat I've been meaning to do since February.

Just slightly stuck on which rad I need. I've measured it so I've got the dimensions nailed down but it looks like there are two versions - one with a thermoswitch, and one without. How do I know which one I need? 2l Petrol Manual, non-a/c, '92MY.

thermoswitch version: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NISSENS-C...UAAOSw6TRatcW5

non-thermoswitch version:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NISSENS-6...N/291580031272

Coolant-wise I'm going to do a reverse flush. Looks like capacity is around 10l? So 5l of ethylene glycol and 5l of water?

If you have an electric fan you need a thermoswitch

Coolant capacity is more like 8L

Your current coolant looks like it's got half of Bournemouth Beach in it

It's 8.5L. Either use Volvo genuine or Comma Super Coldmaster / Xstream G48

The 940 doesn't use a sensor in the rad for the electric fan, the fan is controlled via the ecu and used the temp sensor on the head

Thanks for the swift reply - viscous fan so no thermoswitch needed. Thanks for advice on coolant too. Agree - not happy with how rusty it looks!

That's interesting. I have old skool viscous but broke a celebration with electric fan. How does that work with a swap to electric then ?

Early 940s had a switch in the radiator, later cars had fans that were controlled by the fuel ECU operating a relay to bring the fan on. Not quite so reliable most of the time.

THere are many ways you can convert to an electric fan if you want to Mark, is that what you're thinking?

Yes I am but only if I can plug and play. I have the electric fan and all related gubbins electric relay thingy. But if I have to start faffing with cutting hoses and putting stuff where its not meant to be I'd rather stick with my old skool viscous

Is the fan you have a 1 or 2 speed jobby? Also do you have the hole in your radiator for the thermoswitch? It may be you have the outputs from your fuel ECU for the relay (despite the vicious coupled fan - deliberate typo there! ) in which case it would be plug'n'play, if not you can wire a themoswitch to do the same as the ECU does to the relay.

If you were prepared to cut the top hose, it's easy to fit an adaptor and thermoswitch. All depends what you already have and could make use of really.

It's a two speed relay that's situated in front of the battery. I'll have a look to see if I have any wiring in my car which would plug into relay. My logic thinks there won't be but you never know
