If you were doing the clutch and the flywheel hadn't been changes in the last 80k miles, yes I would change the flywheel. There are probably aftermarket ones available for a half-sensible price by now.

Always consider the labour cost of splitting it open again within a couple of years if the DMF should fail so soon after doing the clutch. If the original has lasted that long [180k miles], consider it a minor miracle.

The release bearing is one expensive piece of the kit, don't forget to replace it some people cut corners and replace the plates only.

Sorry........its a D5 2.4 - the garage said the cost would write the car off which seems such a shame as apart from slight clunking when just setting off or slow reversing, the car still drives beautifully and is absolutely in brilliant condition...?

I have Seen quotes of £1500 for that job, yes it's virtually or nearly the cost of the car.

Hi i got quoted £1200 for complete job using a quality kit by a gearbox specialist in Peterborough. Shop around, but putting a cheap one in is false economy mate. Dave

If the car is otherwise good enough for a couple or three years or more, then the relative value of the car is pretty much irrelevant. Its just something that encourages you to sell the car for a fraction of its true worth, even if only in parts for breaking alone. What is the value to YOU? If it isn't much and you are looking for a reason to dump it, or if you think that it is likely to turn into a money-pit, then don't start spending on it.

Several things could cause that so they're doing well to diagnose a flywheel based on those symptoms.

I have 195k on the original flywheel and am in no hurry to do anything with it.

There's a lot to be said for "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". However, there's a fine line between that and repairing something before it causes collateral damage. Some people can judge it fairly well most of the time. Many people can't and either repair things that don't need doing or let themselves get into financially catastrophic trouble by ruining large complex components with their inaction. Its a fine line.
