Default Cambelt directional?

Hi,

As subject, I fitted it reverse of what I would normally do, so the white markers don't fit. I can't see anything with regards to the belt that looks like it would be affected by running "backwards", so assume it's ok?

Happy New Year!

No it does not matter unless there is an arrow on the belt like certain renault engines used in older volvos .

I can't see any rationale for it's being directional. It doesn't pull constantly in one direction - all 3 shafts spin, and depending on whether the crankshaft is in "drive" or overrun the tension will surely reverse depending on their relative momentum?

It is often said that belts usually fail either at speed when the throttle is eased (when the camshaft is trying to catch up the crankshaft) or at low speed (when the camshaft has low momentum and the opening and closing of valves imposes an oscilating load on the belt)

Having said that, I've just replaced a belt and noticed that the new one does have direction arrows, so perhaps it does/might matter.

What I also noticed was that the old belt was not centralised on the sprockets, but closer to the engine side. It was still on the teeth, just off-centre.
Odd for a Volvo service centre to do that - I've always assumed the belt should be securely in the middle - it looks more workmanlike even if perhaps it doesn't really matter.

The belt moves as soon as the engine spins, doesn't matter where you place it. If it's not center, somethings slightly mis-aligned with your sprockets.

It hasn't moved. I centred it and then wound the engine over several times by hand, watching it. After I'd started and run the engine for a while I rechecked and it was still centred.
So the old belt must have been deliberately or accidentally offset from the start.
Odd, but clearly didn't matter.
