RE: Difference between 850T5 and T5R
Hello Robin,
The answer to your original question is that the only difference between your engine and that in a T5R is that the ECU of the T5R allows for a short period of overboost that gives a few horses more. Otherwise, the only differences were a host of standard extras... leather seats, better stereo, electric gixmos and of course Volvo's very handsome Titan wheels. The engine that was in the later 850R was different in that it had larger injectors on a different rail, different inlet manifold, larger Mitsubishi turbo, stronger rods and a different set of ECU software. That engine became the T5 engine in the S and V70 series of facelifted vehicles... also the C70 T5. The later S and V70 R models only varied in their yet larger turbos and ECU software. As has been earlier stated, you will achieve the same outcome with some software upgrade whether with your T5 or T5R software. So £100 would be worth teh effort then..
25BHP for 30secons is half a N2O 50BHP nozzell without the need for some extra gass... The vendor did mention that there are two different EFI systems on the T5 How do I tell them appart to make sure mine will be ok.. Ta TT |

TT,
I've tried a few different mods on my car and by far the biggest bang for buck is to buy a MBC valve (not the same as a bleed valve). They cost about £20 and you can set the boost pressure at 14 psi instead of the stock 9 psi. There is a big improvement in performance and turbo lag is vastly reduced also. £100 for an ecu as a spare isnt a bad price and combined with the extra performance is OK. Your best bet is to get an ecu upgrade from Don at Kalmar Union or Adam at Rica. The former being a lot cheaper but the latter possibly having greater gains. It all depends on how much you want to spend. Nigel, You have mentioned before that your old T5 was nippier. Did it just have less turbo lag so initial acceleration was better. Is the R stronger when the revs increase? A bigger turbo and fatter exhaust probably explains the lag. Simon |
