I would make sure if its an earlier model it doesnt have the DPF option fitted. Search through the forum here for a good few views on that and that with the electrical bits and peices fitted, make sure they all work. B*****r otherwise.
Go for the highest spec one you can find, mileage isnt and issue. If you have leather seats, make sure you have heated seats as well. Chilly in the winter on the bum otherwise.
Really just trawl through the forum here to see what other people have asked and found and best of luck in your search.

Beware that the wheel bearings are absolute crap and don't last, mines on 95K now and I've had to replace 3 wheel bearings in the last 10K miles. No idea about the 4th one as I bought it used so that may have already been replaced, or knowingly my look about to need replacing.

The alternators seem to be junk too, just had to replace mine, the 120A version is too small, the 150A one went in mine.

Thanks lads, wheel bearings have gone on my t4 twice in a year and a half ownership too Which is the best diesel engine to go for, not sure i can afford the d5 just yet, could save a bit longer for it but the petrol costs to work and back are mad.

Depending on version (with/with out DPF) I'd say the 2.0D. 320 nm (the same amount as a stock T5) and a 6 speed is really worth getting. The 1.6D is ideal if you really want to look at MPG but the 2.0D is definately better if you are looking at the odd fun moment...

It has a very low rev range and torque peak is around 2000 rpm so you get, if in that rev range, a lot of push from behind... And at the same time that hype can go and you'll need to change gear...

So it has the grunt but in a very "limited" range... I think it has more torque than your current T4

remapped 2.0D will be the best performance/economy compromise IMHO.

Cruise 5mph slower and you'll match the 1.6 D... and have a lot more fun on sliproads and overtaking tractors!

Not as much as a D5 0 to 62 7.9 secs Top Speed 140 and buckets of mid range pull.

Save your pennies for a D5 if you can, the MPG difference between the 2.0D and D5 is only small I am getting almost 50 mpg from my D5 on the 40 mile cross country round trip too and from work.

The D5 is few insurance groups higher and tax band higher but if you are doing big miles every year then a 2.0D will need a service every 12,000 miles but a D5 is 18,000. so pros and cons for both.

I also have a D5. Couldn't find many 2.0D around the age I was looking for. I'm getting close to 50mpg as well. Way better than the 407 it replaced which had the 2.0D engine. There are bargains on D5s out there so purchase costs aren't much different.
