I test drove 3 D5's and didn't find any hesitation/lag with any of them. The one I bought, as soon as you touch the pedal it starts to move. I must admit it's not a greyhound out of the blocks, but it doesn't feel unsafe and I'm happy with it. Compared to my petrol V70, it's better because I felt I had to push the pedal harder to get the desired response.

Whether it's me or my driving style (I tend not to push it too hard unless I have to), I don't know whether my comments just confuse things further.

Why are some cars like it and others aren't, or will mine show these characteristics in time?

Cheers,

Finbo
I wouldn't worry. Mine never has.

I have had my XC90 D5 (163) 2005 for around 3 months now and have also noticed the hesitation to move off from standstill. I also noticed that the revs seem to climb too high (unnecessarily so in my view) before any torque is noticed. This seems to happen in other gears too when moving. Could this be a mechanical problem which can be fixed? I got the car checked by an engineer before I bought it and mentioned the problem to him but he said it was okay.

Whilst the hestitation from standstill is not too long on mine (about 1-1.5 sec), it is not always consistent therefore adding to the danger.

Cool takes time

The fault you are all talking about is one that is there from day one as its a caricaturistic of a XC90, why not try a S80 with the same set up (not the 4x4 bit) and it will be the same in my humble opinion. The problem is that you have got familiar to the car now. And yes GSMGUY the bio fuel will give you problems not only on response but on the engine in general be careful.

Thats local dealer had 2nd go at the hesitation that they added when they upgraded and cured the gearbox problem and they've said thats just the way the car is supposed to be now. "it performs as well as they would expect for that model of car." BAsically the laptop wont tell them whats wrong so they havent a clue. RT for a Rica I think.

Unhappy

Spoke to Volvo Uk today and they are raising a tech issue for it. They're going to call local dealer today for a more detailed explanation of what they're checking and going to get back to me. The girl I spoke to said that if there are enough folk complain to them of the same fault then obviously they'll have a fault that will need to be looked at in depth!

I'd really like to say I am surprised, but this is similar to the response I received in 2004 - see my post on page 1 of this thread.
I too hope GSM has more success, but don't hold your breath!

Now, had this not been a Ford-owned company the response might have been different - and before anyone starts on about how much Ford's money has been useful/essential for Volvo, which has been covered in other threads, this is about safety and in terms of safety I merely ask readers to Google Ford together with "Pinto".

As I have suggested previously, had multiple deaths been attributed to this delay or "feature" then Ford-Volvo might have done something about it. The fact that most Volvo drivers are sensible and cautious has probably saved much death and injury, but by so doing has weakened our claim to this being a serious and dangerous design defect.

Anyone fancy being a martyr for the cause

Called yesterday to see where they were with the emialed complaint and they havent even logged it onto the system yet so nobody had any ideas what it was about yet. So much for the endeavour to get back to you in 3 days when they haven't even OPENED it in 4 days and put it on the system!!! Told them if I dont get substantive answers by Monday I was going to Sweden with my complaints!!! Wait till Mnday and see time now I doubt. Saying that I have the letter attached to an email ready to go!!
