Default V50/S40 - dpf ?

Hi,

As per my other post on auto gearboxes, I’m contemplating the purchase of a V50/S40. This question relates to dpf - on 2009 1.6 diesel engines.

I’ve seen mention of the dpf only having a limited life, 120k miles is mentioned. Is this true, what engines does this apply to? I’ve also seen references to dpf fluid - some thing really.

Any comments or pointers welcomed.

Thanks - Rob

2009 1.6d has a wet dpf that needs replacing around 80,000 mile mark. This is the same as the 2.0d engine.

DPF fluid needs topping up every 36,000 miles if I recall. Later versions, (cant remember which year!) ditched the DPF fluid and went for a dry DPF system.

The Volvo D3/D4/D5 engines use a dry DPF system.

The Volvo 5 Cylinder diesel/petrol engines can get expensive in terms of maintenance, though they will all do mega miles.

Personally, in the V50/S40 I would avoid all diesels (but go for Volvo engine if cannot avoid) and just buy a 2.0-litre petrol instead.

When you say maintenance, do you mean routine servicing costs on the D3-D5 range?

Yes.

The Volvo engines D3/D4/D5/T5 are very reliable, but you cannot skimp on maintenance. E.g you cannot just replace only the timing belt and pulleys, you must also replace the auxiliary belt and pulleys... If aux belt or pulley fails, it will take the timing belt with it and wreck your engine. People often forget to change the aux belt bits...

Also, if you don't shop around Volvo parts can be a bit pricey.

You can of course save money by doing as much maintenance as possible yourself. One plus point is the Volvo community is very strong globally and you can find guides to do just about anything on these engines as a DIY task.
