So now I'm well jealous Jack

I've used other Gunson tools in the past, in the distant past their timing light did a good job and I still use their Eezibleed system for the brakes. The Eezibleed needs a little intelligent manipulation to get the best result (mostly lower pressure to allow for the load sensing valve on the rear brakes) but nothing to tricky, if I had the space to use it [Trakrite] (and I considered a number of friends who might have a suitable space too) I would have bought it.
I have also in the past made some ad hoc adjustments to tracking, and more so the steering wheel angle, after doing things like track rod ends based on not much more than looking at the wear on the tyres in order to get it in the ball park before paying the lads with the lasers, so a reasonable DIYer with the right kit and facilities should be able to do it.
Unfortunately a lot of places only live up to the 'professional' epithet in as much as they make you pay for them to do it badly

15 years ago a work friend of my mothers took her freshly-mot'd Fiesta into a high street tyre emporium for a puncture repair....

She called us up in tears after they said "did you really drive it here" and "it's dangerous" etc.....

They wanted around £600.00 for discs, pads, brake fluid etc etc.

I told her to say "jam it", get the keys back, and get the hell out of there.

I know there's some great trustworthy specialists out there but it's about time the motor trade were held accountable for some of their scams we hear about. Mind you a lot of customers don't help themselves when they drop cars off saying "just do whatever it needs" and "I want it to be safe" etc etc....

Of course we all want safe cars, who would knowingly drive around in an unsafe one. Recognising when a car is unsafe is easy enough for an enthusiast whom does their own maintenance , different matter for those whom only drive them.

Free safety checks is the bait that gets them hooked.

Had a phone call from middle daughter one day, her and her mate were driving around town in her mates BMW cabriolet, squeal from the rear every time she used the brakes. Saw a free safety check sign in kwik fit so mate took it in there. 20 min or so later the manager comes to her mate telling her the front disks were dangerously worn and she should not drive it from there. £300+vat to make it safe for her.

Fortunately daughter has her head screwed on and while she abhors dirty fingernails knew that I had renewed the risks and pads on the front of her metro at a material cost of £60, so she asks what we getting for ,£300 genuine BMW parts? No no world famous valeio disks and pads. It was at this point she phoned me.

My advise to her was sounds like dust in the rear drums. Did it stop OK before you went into Kwak fit? Yes. Then take it from there and book it in with the garage that normally services it, it is no more dangerous now than it was before they looked at it.

This was duly done, her garage cleaned the dust from the rear drums which stopped the squeal and checked the front disks and pads, declaring nothing wrong and fit for thousands of miles further service.

To this day daughter remembers they tried to rip her mate off and avoids them like the plague while not being slow to tell of her experience to other friends and acquaintances.

Their business model must be dupe the vunerable once because there seems to be plenty of them even if they don't come back a second time.

Paul.

On the subject of doing tracking/alignments it has been my experience that every time I've taken the S70 for tracking over the years (1 large chain, 1 smaller chain and a very good independent) I've had to actually show people how to adjust the rear as the standard answer is "the rear isn't adjustable". To be fair it isn't blindingly obvious to those who don't deal with them frequently.

Unfortunately one of them is my sister, she gave her old Pug 307 to my son so I had a browse of the service history (to be fair she is very good at keeping receipts), she has used her nearest branch of the high street chain that claims to fit you up kwik ,when my son and I later serviced the car I would have to say I doubt they ever fitted the spark plugs they charged her for, the most recent rip off was on her Pug 307 they had fitted Continental tyres at over £100 per corner, when I asked her why she was going there and paying those prices she replied they were local, and they gave her a free coffee! I pointed out for what she was paying she could drive from Watford to MK, use the guys I use and not get ripped off, come over and see us, and ... my guys would give her a free coffee too. Needless to say she still goes to Fit U up Kwik, you just can't help some people.

On a similar theme....I once went to look at a 2 year old car with my Father which he'd seen advertised at a local dealer....it was in one of those Coffee-laden showrooms with twinkly lighting, tiled floors and plants everywhere.

He decided he liked the car and exclaimed to the shiny-suited Sales Operative "you won't sell it to anyone else will you because I'd like to buy it?"

Needless to say negotiating anything off the sticker price was useless from that point
