Locking Wheel nuts

Hi

Got my new tyres delevered couple of day ago, went to local garage to get them fitted today & the first locking wheel nut the lad tried to remove snapped off half way in leaving well & truely snookered, 3 hours later & after having to drill out the wheel stud the job is completed
Is this a common fault ? Or just a case of the nuts been over tightened several times over the years ?
As a precaution I've now removed the rest of them as well & fitted normal wheel nuts !

If they slackened off the non-locking nuts first then all the pressure would have been on the locking nut. Could this have been the reason for the problem!!!

I'm not really sure it would have made any difference to be honest, the locking nut is very thin in the middle, a pretty crap design, I bet this has happened loads of time, well not any more to me as I said I've done away with them !

Got a flat on friday night just on the driveway so took car into garage and proceeded to take off wheel.All bar the locking nut would come off.Noticed the special key to remove nut was slighlty wore so applied alot of pressure and via a torgue wrench got it off and the other locking nuts were disposed off.The star design lock nut is a Balls of an idea.

Any idea where i can get 4 standard nuts for a v50 sport???

Do you know if he tried to get the locking wheel nuts off with a windy gun? This is an almost guaranteed method of smashing them to bits.

I have had issues with locking wheelnuts/bolts on several cars in the past and consiquently dont use them anymore.
Infact one of the negotiating tools I used when purchasing my current S60, was the lack of a locking wheelbolt key! As soon as I got it home, the locking wheelbolts were removed, binned and replaced with standard bolts. Just for peace of mind, knowing I wont be stuck on the side of the road, with a puncture, at night, in the rain!!

Yeah, probably a good move. Dont think anyone nicks alloy wheels much these days anyway.

Yeah he did use a snap on battery impact gun, straight away I got a power bar & loosened the other 3 without a problem !
Binned them, the garage give me 4 wheel nuts which they had, just the same chrome ones as well.
I doubt anyone bother going to trouble of nicking alloys any longer as well....I hope !!

I had to replace my Volvo ones after 6 years. One started to break apart but thankfully I could remove it with care. I removed the other 3 and then fitted a new set.

I blame the use of impact guns by certain garages for the state they got into. The garage I used to use only ever used a manual torque wrench and for years I had no bother.

Did exactly the same with our S60. My last car had exactly the same locking nuts (McGard) and i ended up wasting a day having to drill out a wheel stud on our 2 year old Jeep. Just put normal wheel bolts on in their place.
The days of alloys being stolen has pretty much long gone thankfully.

I will never have them on a car again!!!!
