Price of insurance?!

Hi all,
I'm coming up to my 17th birthday and unlike other kids my age I don't want a run of the mill Euro box on wheels. I really like the look of the Volvo 240 DL 2.0 litre saloon. However I am completely unsure where I stand on insurance as I do not want to spending loads on the Volvo. Would anyone on the forum be able to shed some light or previous knowledge on how much I would have to spend to insure it?

If you don't want to spend loads, get a bus pass. Most 200 series Volvos are in group 13 (of 20).

Consider a 300 series. A 2.0l 360 GLT is only group 9. A 340 1.4l is group 7.

They are odd and that is probably why I do like them in a funny way.

Insurance is a joke for most 17 years olds. I few local 17 year old lads are paying between £2-3000 for basic small car like a corsa, micra Ka etc.

Some of the farmers sons have gone with a land rover on farm insurance for the first year as it is a LOT cheaper.

Yes, I remember that from school, it was so unfair! I ended up with an N-reg Escort 1.3.

You will get screwed with insurance whatever you choose, so shop around for quotes on comparison sites and pick an interesting car that suits you that hopefully won't break the bank. My parents gave me car insurance as a birthday present for many years, as my policy always ran from my birthday, so it means your parents won't have to think of new presents every year!

2.0 is probably out the question to be honest. Volvos aren't too friendly as first cars, sure, they're reliable, good cars, but they are stupidly expensive to repair should you have an accident and the engine is pretty big (for a first car)

Your best bet is something small, bit crap, very low insurance group.

5 years ago I had a 1997 1.4i corsa when I passed and that was £1200 to insure, my mum at the time had a 440 1.8 and that would have cost nearly twice as much to insure - And it was slower! Insurance is even higher now than it was then

Your wallet will get raped anyway by the insurers regardless of what you choose but you're much better off with a smaller engine/car if you're worried about costs

Insurance is a complete joke.

In 2009 I paid £1900 when I was 17 to insure a 1.9 BMW 316i Sport Compact. A few months later a friend paid £2500 to insure a 1.1 Metro! The price really does seem to vary from day to day, completely inconsistent. My presumption is that if a company hasn't made many new deals recently then they're happier to offer a better price.

That deal I had for that BMW with Quinn Direct was brilliant and I too was getting stupid prices back for 'ordinary' starter cars so for me it just made sense to get the Bimmer!

Look through price comparison sites regularly with quote start dates waaay in advance so when you find a good price it'll still be live when you're ready to buy !

A few tricks I've found in the past is that putting the car's overnight location when at home as 'On the road' is much cheaper than 'Driveway' and cheaper again than 'Garaged'! Hard to believe I know but that's what I've found with my cheaper quotes!

Also, yes, put as many older experienced drivers on your policy as possible as named drivers, it really brings the premium down! By having my Aunt and Uncle on my policy halves my quote, and they don't even actually use the car or live with me, still perfectly legal mind as I'm still the main driver and policy holder!

sorry to revive such an old thread, but i believe i have some relevant info for the OP, and other people regarding this subject.

for me, my second year driving (with 1 years no claims) i managed to get very cheap insurance on 2/2.3 turbo volvos, I was mainly looking at 7/9 series, they consistently came up cheaper than almost every other car i was getting quotes on.

At 20 years old with 1 years no claims i paid around 600£ for 1 year on a 2.0 turbo 940 sedan. much better than any corsa/fiesta quote (that i personally got, i was looking at around half the price of those car's insurance)

im currently driving a 2.3 turbo 760.
if you want to get the cheapest quote you can, make sure you get something quite old, try for 20+ years, and it must have low owners (that affected it for me, i'd say no more than 2 owners, maybe 3)
and you should get some decent quotes. Also i found Aviva to be cheapest, they aren't on your normal comparison site, get as many quotes as you can.
