Default Daytime running lights

I have a 2010 C70 and would like to do away with the daytime running lights. Local Volvo garage tells me that leegislation does not allow this, but I take it from the legislation that DRL's are compulsory AFTER 2011, although I believe that the UK has never introduced a rule requiring the use of DRL's.
Anyway, question is, can anyone tell me how to disengage thes lights? Thanks .

A dealer (or independent) can do this in VIDA. I had them switched off at purchase in my 2009 V50.

2010 car they were not mandatory so find another garage.
If you have a later car with LED DRLs then you cannot switch them off but pre-2012/13 cars which have the whole car lit up (front and rear) and use the dipped headlight units can have them switched off.

If the type approval for the car included the dipped headlights being switched on and used as DRL - even before the mandatory requirement - then the dealer may be technically correct as switching them off means that he is changing the car from the type approval.

What you need to so is find out what they type approval contained.

As the CoC is for Europe, the switching on and off of DRLs tends to be mandated by the local sales company. Volvo in Germany did not have DRL on up to 2012/13, the UK and Sweden did. Sweden for a good reason, the UK for a marketing differentiation.

But why?

Since the new(ish) legislation, so many cars have them without causing problems. And on a murky day they make cars more visible.

My C70 is an 'older' one, and I have set the headlight switch so that I do have DRLs. Makes it easier for other people to see me. Jasper Carrot made fun of early Volvos not being able to switch off their headlights; but the added safety of being more visible was a good point and was eventually made as standard and, eventually, a requirement.

There is little evidence that they make a contribution to casualty reduction anywhere other than countries with a sub arctic climate.

There is actually some evidence that over-bright DRL's or daytime headlamp use (as opposed to proper dim-dip daytime headlamps) may actually cause an increase in certain types of collision. The bright lights break up the outline of the oncoming vehicle and thus deprive the observers brain of the necessary datum required to accurately calculate its speed as its outline cannot be seen as it 'grows' against the background. Once you're aware of this phenomenon you can actually see it in action on certain models of car.

I'd be quite interested in the evidence you have for either of these claims. Would you mind providing a link ?

Here's a link to a synthesis of research covering 41 studies that concludes that:
"...The use of DRL reduces the number of multi-party daytime accidents for cars by about 5-15%. All studies that have evaluated the effects of using DRL for cars have found a reduction of the number of accidents, but the size of the estimated reduction varies from study to study......"

".....(An) absence of adverse effects was found with respect to driver visual capacities...."
