The issue of having to 'waste' energy heating the cabin surely won't be any different in a hydrogen/fuel cell vehicle? Obviously a hydrogen/ICE will still create lots of unwanted heat that could be piped into the cabin, but this is just a side-effect of inefficiency. Either way, hydrogen fuelled vehicles seem unlikely to become popular due to the huge energy needed to isolate and compress the hydrogen so it can be used as a fuel. Also regenerative braking is not possible on a hydrogen fuelled vehicle, unlike a BEV.
Many BEVs now offer a heat pump option.

No you don’t have to freeze at all.
People like to jump on EVs from 1998 and point out the range issues, battery pack reliability and materials mined. You need to ask them…. Why materials are mined for the batteries? How much material (they don’t know lol!). Also ask all the EV owners you know and see if they have had battery pack failures? Toyota put £1B aside for future EV costs and payments and basically didn’t touch it (the packs don’t fail). Tesla now honour the warrenty of you don’t have the vehicle serviced as the drive train is basically maintenance free (with caveats). EVs use incredibly small amounts of ore and materials deleterious to the environment, are exceptionally reliable, charge to 80% extremely quickly with a charge point and are exceptionally reliable (more so than external combustion engines). EVs are expensive, as any early adopters find, I expect that will last a good 10 years. When people criticise EVs based on economics and availability of charge point for flat owners and those without a drive that’s very valid. When people start talking coal power stations, minerals and materials mined and such like that’s just bias. Once again ask them what materials and what qty. they won’t know and will usually result to insults. So buy your EV and keep nice and warm and enjoy good performance, reliability and refinement driving the future now! |

Yes, my V60 also did this. But a microscopic drop in the ocean compared to real regenerative braking that captures all the energy that the brakes would normally dissipate as wasted heat when slowing or even coming to a complete stop.
