Thanks very much for all the advice - hopefully the car will be in good condition as the V40's do seem hard to come by!

Being '99 it most probably has the B4194T2 engine, which has the Vairiable Valve Timing. Listen to the top left of the engine for any unusual metallic noise. The pulleys tend to go first and are around £150 to replace.
When the engine is up to temp, switch it off and try start it a couple of times. It should start straight away each time, if not then the fuel pressure regulator is showing signs of weakness - another £80
