Default 284:ECM-5200 Engine Speed (RPM) sensor.Signal missing, B6294

XC90 T6 Petrol 2.9cc - year 2003

Hi folks,
Bit of a strange starting issue that we have - has anyone had anything similar and how did you rectify?

The first fault was that the car took along time to start - about 10 attempts to start with code 284:ECM-5200 Engine Speed (RPM) sensor.Signal missing, B6294T.

We took it to a local Volvo specialist and they informed us that normally this meant that the ECM would need replacing (£700) but they didn't think this was the case. So they have insultaed & shrink wraped main sections of wiring loom to help with interference problem from surrounding circuits and wiring looms and run in a new wiring loom to ECM.

They also replaced the starter motor which had a bolt missing.
The car would then start first time every time.
Total cost £1300.

Now 2 weeks later we have a situation where the car will start first time in the morning but NOT when it gets hot - again it now takes a few minutes before the engine will turn over!!

Any ideas? suggestions welcome - thank you.

£1300 - UNBELIEVABLE!
I feel sorry for people paying a fortune to so called volvo or whatever make specialists who dont know a thing!

You have a trouble code 284:ECM-5200 Engine Speed (RPM) sensor.Signal missing. A clear indicator where it should be started to trace a fault

Plug scanner, read fault, check live sensor data. If that is not enough than for a deeper diagnostics test wiring with simple digital multimeter! A sensor has only 2 wires going directly into ECU. Not a big deal to test these wires if there is a short to ground for example. Check voltage. Sensor is supplied with 5v. 1st wire - ground (from ECU), 2nd live 5v

ECU is the last thing to blame.
£1300 for 2 wires loom?
Oh dear...
