Shake, Rattle and Roll.
I have an 03 XC90.
Now, at that age, I expect it not to ride like a brand new model, but when I got it it rattled like a bag of bolts. I've worked my way through, curing them as I find them. From new drop links, to sticky felt pads around the load cover seating points. I sorted what I think could be the second to last rattle yesterday: Belly pan had a broken mount. I knew this. But yesterday I put a large washer on the bolt which overlapped and secured the plastic. It made a noticeable difference. The only rattle I have left occurs when I hit a decent sized pothole (and we seem to have plenty to choose from around here!). I get a rattle which seems to come up through the steering column. Firstly, is this something to be worried about? I figure it can't be too severe as it's been like this for 3 years. Has anyone come across this? Is it an easy fix? Any ideas? Thanks

Check the subframe mounts bushes. If they are the culprit you can add inserts quite easily to beef them up.
Also check the exhaust hangers. Knocks and rattles often seem to come from places well away from where they actually are.

Check the top mounts on the strut assembly & control arm bushes.
