The other kick in the teeth with any "cover" is, you're hiding the component, so if a slight split or crack starts, you stand no chance of spotting before it opens up and looses oil/fuel/water everywhere.
whereas you can easily look at a rubber hose, and keep a check on those "age cracks", so the moment the hose either feels very hardend or super soft, you know its time over and need to replace. keep things in sight, then your weekly checks will spot things [hopefully] before it breaks. |

Very true - the only real time you can fit covers without worrying is when the components they're covering are new. If you've just spent out on new rubber hoses, clean & polish them up and leave them as they are!
