A Cast coupling will be heavier, but at least it will be easier to bolt onto the metal base.

EDIT:- just had a look at the PDF

http://www.tigerlifting.com/media/66...bhw-201309.pdf

That seems perfect, wish I'd known about it when I made mine.

I had looked for a winch and phoned boat yards/chandlers and stuff and been bemused. I had given up. You encouraged me so I lookd again and this time I found this on eBay. I 'phoned the UK seller and they seemed to know their stuff. It arrived overnight DPD as promised.

In case of temptation, I think the 800 is not braked.

And thanks that PDF is better than the info I had so far.

So how does this work then? Does it dangle a load off it's cable end, but not allow travel backwards until the handle is reverse-cranked?

Yes exactly that. Rope won't move unless the handle is turned. And it is braked in both directions, lowering and raising. The parts diagram on that pdf link might reveal how it works.

I looked at the PDF but couldn't see much about how it worked. But that's brilliant, nice one.

I just typed a post but lost it. Let me try again.

Thanks to everyone. In particular rtb rekindled me to get the job done. Ta.

What I have now is 33cm length of 100mm x 50mm steel box section with the winch bolted on top at one end. A keyhole is cut underneath at the other end to fit the towball. Simple method and it works. The assembly sits well on the towball. Guess about 10 degrees below level. I think the hitch idea would be better for heavier more regular use.

Now the winch is green. The open tin of Hammerite for the box section is silver. Will that be OK?
