Hi

I’m looking at buying a 2011 v50 1.6 diesel r design. It has 39000 miles on the clock. I believe it’s the 8 valve engine and not the 16 valve. I have been looking online and have heard some horror stories regarding the turbo and dpf. Are these problems just on the 16 valve or does the 8 valve suffer as well. The vehicle has fsh but ham very wary as don’t want to buy trouble. Would appreciate any advice.

Cheers.

Forums are where owners complain of problems.
The 16v had problems if not properly maintained, but millions are being used in a whole range of cars.
The 8v seems much better.

Any horror stories on these engines are down to poor maintenance and neglect , wrong engine oil too .
This has to be the world's most popular Diesel engine , it is a good engine if serviced correctly .

Thanks, is this the engine where you have to replace the dpf after 70k or is that just the 16 valve. I obviously don't know how its been looked after but according to the service book its got all its history so i'm assuming that side of it should be ok. I really like the style of the car and have wanted one for ages so i think i will get it just this uncertainty over the engine is bothering me. I even spoke to my local dealer and they warned me off the engine aswell suggesting i go for a petrol version or the d5.

By ythe way this is the car.https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...dius=35&page=1

That's just the 16valve one.

The D2 you linked to their has a dry/maintenance free DPF.

I have the same car and it's totally fine. The low miles is a little concerning so I would check how it's been driven.

You do see a few people on here with problems with the 1.6D but as has been said this invariably related to lack of/improper maintenance. The downside of buying a smaller diesel engine powered car is that previous owners often selected them because they don't want to spend money on them.

Quote from the internet "...this engine can be ordered in an unprecedented variety of car models, representing either side of the motoring spectrum, ranging from the MINI Cooper D to the Volvo S80 1.6D DRIVe."

I had a 2009 1.6D DRIVe (5-speed box). The 75k service cost me over £1000 because it included the DPF replacement. Not a happy bunny at the time (as the dealer very kindly didn't tell me until I turned up on the day -- "oh, by the way, you do realise this is an expensive service sir").

good engine? the DV6 is a catastrophically bad engine. the reason there are so many of them is down to production costs, tax band incentives and the Euro 4 emissions regs that it flew thru, not because its good.

Its light , It's powerful , It's economical , It has good emission, Generally in volvos it is reliable ... That's a good engine in my opinion ..

Yes i have seen terrible filth build up in them due to neglect in citroens for example .. It is all down to proper maintenence ...or not !

I agree I mean just look at the tales of woe in the 30/40/50 section! It’s endless compared to the d5s with double even tripple the miles.
