Volvo 740 turbo 16V
Hello, you've probably already seen my previous threads on my old 740 turbo and me wanting a 740 turbo and I'm still trying to find one. I've been looking around and there seems to be a popular conversion from 8v to 16v. What sort of power increase should I expect if I do this, and does anything else have to be changed I.e wiring look etc.
If anyone wants to sell their older 740 Turbo I will be interested. Just to say, I'd like a pre facelift model. Thanks |

wooah there
There are about 30 740 turbos left in the UK, flat front ones maybe 20.
It is a popular conversion for big power and only worth doing if you must have above 400bhp. You need to have a few grand spare to do it also. The limit for the block is about 700bhp. Get a flat front 740 first then convert to turbo.

Thanks, on that note that conversion could be an impossible dream then. I bet it’s probably easier to do a T5 conversion but I’d never take an original 740 turbo off the road and ruin its originality. Let’s hope someone has a decent project that I can do.
Thanks anyway |

Another way?
You could take a 740 GLT (ie a B234f) use an adaptor plate (try Dave Slater for that) and an 90+ manifold, and a 16 or 17 turbo (clocking may be involved) and +T it. There are two issues this way apart from the obvious of the exhaust. The easier of those is the turbo oil drain. The one that bothers me is the oil feed from the oil pump from the turbo. Open to suggestions.
You will smash the M46/7 om there and you sill need the Sachs diesel clutch to mate with an M90 and of course the M90 prop.

This vid gives you an idea of what is involved with a 16v conversion. You would be better off upgrading turbo, injectors, cam, intercooler etc etc on the 8v if you are on a budget. As said before, the transmission/ clutch would need upgrading before any power hike as the M46/7 is not much good beyond 250 bhp. |
