Clutch packed up (2001 v40)
On the way home my clutch suddenly gave up the ghost.
The pedal goes straight to the floor but looking at the small cylinder on the front of the engine there is perceptible movement. Is there a cable anywhere or is it all hydraulic? I suspect that a seal has gone |

It's hydraulic. Check the level in the brake fluid reservoir.

So the mechanic popped round and added some fluid. Where the rubber hose meets the cylinder there is a split and the fluid gushes out. Looks like a relatively easy fix but the pipe is a Volvo only part which he's ordered.
Thanks again guys |

Car is back fixed.
Mechanic hacked off as he reckoned the hose was worth a. Tenner but only available from Volvo for £60. Total bill was £110 which imho was pretty good considering they drove over to collect it and return it . |

Not a bad bill, the hose is probably worth around a fiver, you could likely get something todo the job made up by a hose guy for less, but for the part that will fit up perfectly and from main dealer is rarely cheap.
On the other hand, I wouldn't worry mechanics moan about the price of everything, everything is too expensive aside from their labour rates that is lol

Hi, just to make you feel a little better I'll tell you my story. I once loaned my v40 to my son in law. Hereturned it saying the clutch was squeeling . It turned out the release bearing had collapsed which in turn had chewed up the gearbox input shaft. Also when removing the drive shaft to get the gearbox off, the driveshaft bearings dropped off inside the gearbox.I managed to get a second hand gearbox and driveshaftbut including the new clutch cost me £350.

Much better results than having to scrap the car as repairs cost way more than its worth
