For what its worth, I've got a 2007 P2.5 diesel with a dpf. Bought it at 95,000miles.

Had it 2 years and put a further 27,000miles on it(a good mix of town and motorway) with no problems at all. Not a single mention of it on the drivers display.

I put this down to using good diesel and good oil, along with a mild thrashing once a week.

Im saying this as it may be a shame to discount the euro4 diesels, they're not all bad.

If it's an E3 (black engine cover), then it never had a DPF.

Thanks guys, it is getting difficult finding a euro3 with low mileage and the right spec.
I have found a lovely XC70, i'm just a bit worried it could potentially be costly due to spares etc with the awd.
I can do most jobs myself though and is very tempting..

I don't have any problems removing the prop shaft and just having 2wd. I do spend winter in the alps but never really use the car.

Lightbulb DPF (dreaded but why)

Ive had a euro 4 D5, for 6 to 7 years now, done 60k miles mix of short and longer trips, and have never had any kind of Dpf related problem, very few issues at all in fact engine runs superbly if anything its improved with age.. but is had had regular maintenance tho.. so i think the 'dreaded dpf' might be an overstatement, the euro 4 engines are a bit more advanced and do have more hardware that 'could' go wrong, however i think a lot of problems come from lack of maintenance and software updates.. there were some updates to improve the dpf regen going back some years so if your D5 euro 4 has not been near a dealer for years it would be worth checking that these were installed...

As a rule of thumb, if it has a black engine cover it's a Euro3 without a DPF, if its a silver cover its Euro4 with a DPF.

Also, if its 6 speed it will be Euro4.
