Why winter tyres in London? It doesn't really get cold enough. And unfortunately I lived ther for 23 years , gone home now to the Dales ,where some winters warrant all seasons but not really full winters.

Getting to Waitrose is essential no matter the weather.

Same feeling, so much quieter than summers.
But as some pointed out, bit too warm last few days for winter tyres

Is it quieter due to the nature of winter tyres or because you went down in wheel size from 20 to 19"?

When temperature drops, summer tyres become hard(er) and thus (even?) more noisy.

Just put my 19" wheels on with Nokian winter tyres. Noticed a big difference in the road noise and how it feels over potholes etc vs the 20" wheels at this time of year.

I think it is bit of both, gone down from 20" to 18", more wall thickness, less surface contact due to narrower tyres

noticeable difference in noise, of course this is a nice by-product, the main purpose is to have better grip and drive control

just refitted my Goodyear ultragrip +suv 18" to my XC60 2wd-and just in time for some icy conditions and drives more surefootedly than my Pirelli zeros do in summer--downside is an immediate loss of 4mpg on average but still v much worth it.as I'm in the outer Hebrides the benefit of not aquaplaning as well is a huge added bonus.
Wear rate is v good to-still got 6-7mm after10,000 miles

are you satisfied with the TS850? I always had pirelli as winter tires but my dealer is pushing for the Conti in 275/45 R20 v 110 (run flat )

Yes, I'm very happy with them. I'm not a fan of summer Contis because of the noise they produce, especially as they wear down, but these winter ones are really very good in most respects. I assume that the run-flat version will have different characteristics so a direct comparison may not be valid.

I read several reviews of the TS850 and they were always at or near the top of the table.

Oh, and coming home this evening there was some (wet) snow falling. First of the season here in this part of Yorkshire.
