Brake rattle
Hey,
I replaced discs and pads all round on the c70 but the rear passenger side brakes seem to rattle over potholes. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? Thanks Phill |

If they aren't Volvo OEM pads replace them with Volvo OEM pads. Only solution I ever found after a lot of mucking about.
If they are already OEM pads, I've no idea, sorry.

I used to have this problem too, was resolved by changing the pads and applying the handbrake from there on in by pressing the footbrake down, then pulling up the handbrake rather than just pulling the handbrake up.

This car is really annoying me at the moment!!! Changed the rear ate pads out to genuine volvo and the rattle persists although nowhere near as bad but still enough to annoy me!
Took it to garage and they said it could be handbrake shoes? Didnt think the c70 uses them. Also been told that the caliper spring clip that you can see on the outside of the caliper should be replaced as they lose effectiveness. Would that little thing cause rattling? Ordered 2 of them from volvo today for mechanic to swap over. Hopefully it will sort it but dont hold much hope! Cheers Phill |

What type of pads were supplied? Did the inner pad for the rear have a spring clip on it that slots into a machined groove on the end of the piston or were they just flat with a black pad that contacts the piston?
What year is your C70?

I dont really know to be honest as mechanic fitted them. They were genuine volvo pads with a little spring thing on top. Mine c70 is a 2007 mk2 2.4 d5 gearteonic

Check the disc shield plates aren't loose, I had some new discs put on & a day later had a rattling sound, turned out the garage hadn't fitted the shield plates back on properly.

The backong plates are solid and the noise stops when I apply the brakes so it has to be something with the pads/caliper. Im gonna hopefully get the new caliper spring clips fitted tomorrow and see what this does if anything!

I had the same 6 months ago. Re-tensioning the spring sorted mine. Be careful not to deform the spring too much when fitting as they lose their shape quite easily.

Cheers! What does that little spring actually do? Doesnt seem significant enough to do much? I have ordered new ones from Volvo, as mine are pretty rusty.
