Try Grayston spring assistors or MAD spring assistors, just Google them.

Both have been used in the caravan world for years to overcome exactly your problem. Can be a cheap, but effective solution particularly the Grayston which can usually be fitted by jacking up the car and squeezing them in between the coils.

I've known about the Grayston ones, bit worried that they are just putting extra load onto the remaining coils and they've done 173k miles...
The MAD helper springs are a better option but the price...

Loading it up evenly should reduce any issues too. I had 300kg of plaster in mine once and had no issues, just fold seats down and put heavier stuff at the front.

No extra load on the springs if you put 200kg in the back that is on the springs from top to bottom. All the rubber coils do is prevent the springs from fully compressing and therefore stop the rear end sagging too much. Give them a try at about £20 a set you may be surprised how good they are for the money.

It does not bother me there is no easy adjustment and I have not been signalled that I may be dazzling others. I was just wondering if anyone knew why there was no easy adjustment.

Fill the rear springs with balls 9f tennis. No joke. You will find pics in internet. We did this very often at volvos in the past. Car on jack, rear axle "full out" and squeeze them in. Cheap and with great result. We drove with a fully loaded 144, 142 and 164 wuth trailer behind and did find this is one of the best mods. You will imagine the eyes of the mot guy, we forgot to remowe them. He laughs and pleased his co-worker to have look. One old guy said: "I did this too, it's ok" :-)
Nice talk with a volvo nut at the TÜV (German mot)
